He lays about two white eggs that incubate for about 30 days. To begin, he prepares a 3 by 3 meter area on a floating island with vegetation where he builds a large platform nest about 1 meter in diameter. From this point on, the birds become very territorial and defend their nests against predators.įrom the beginning of nest building until the chicks hatch, the reproductive cycle lasts between 6 and 7 months. Although the breeding season can vary by region, it usually occurs at the beginning of the dry season. Breeding pairs establish territories that can be as large as 1.15 square miles. Then, when they see fit, they strike quickly and violently.īecause of its slow development, the shoebill generally takes longer to reproduce than other birds. Slowly and stealthily, it stalks its prey as it ambushes it. To maximize vision, it is usually observed with its head pointing vertically downward. There is no evidence that this species hunts tactilely, unlike some other large wading birds. It is usually a silent bird, although it sometimes makes noise with its beak. If you are wondering if the shoebill can fly despite its size, the answer is yes, and it has great skills. It is common to see it flying over its territory during the day. ![]() ![]() When food is plentiful, this bird does not migrate, but may move within its range to nest or optimize feeding.ĭespite its fearsome appearance, the shoebill does not usually attack humans and sometimes even allows them to approach the nest from a distance. To lose heat, this bird frequently flaps its wings to cool itself. Shoebills are also known for their slow movements and tendency to stand still for long periods of time, leading them to be described as "statuesque". Breeding pairs are generally kept at a distance in their territories. Only if food is scarce, several birds may be seen closer together. ![]() ![]() This is particularly the case in introductory courses. Librarians and faculty could use time dedicated to teaching Boolean logic to teach other IL concepts (such as question development and source evaluation) in courses or disciplines in which Boolean searching is not essential. Anecdotally, librarians have seen students’ natural language searches yield relevant results explaining why students often find Boolean searching superfluous. Interestingly, while the ACRL Standards specifically mention Boolean, the new Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education 2 only refers to searching (controlled vocabulary, keywords, natural language).įor students, it is not always clear that using Boolean logic is better than a natural language or phrase search in the style of Google. Anecdotally, the authors have worked at multiple institutions and taught Boolean regularly, generally introducing the concept at the first-year (introductory) level, and building on that in upper-level classes. This has led to many librarians teaching Boolean logic in one-shot instruction sessions, first-year IL modules and tutorials, and reference interactions. In studies of first-year students’ IL skills, demonstrated knowledge of Boolean logic is frequently evaluated as a determinant of information retrieval proficiency. 1 These standards, though rescinded in 2016, influenced IL education across the United States and beyond for more than fifteen years. However, the concept can be difficult for first-year (introductory) students to grasp, and it can take multiple sessions before a student demonstrates effective use of Boolean logic.Ī student’s ability to use Boolean operators is a performance indicator within the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. Librarians and other information professionals are taught the value of Boolean searching (referred to throughout this article interchangeably as “Boolean”) in professional education, and it is seen in instruction, reference interactions, and database interfaces. IntroductionĬonventional wisdom considers knowledge of Boolean logic a basic information retrieval Information Literacy (IL) skill. ![]() As the Framework for Information Literacy does not specifically address Boolean operators, the authors suggest it should have less prominence in first-year Information Literacy instruction. With evidence that students struggle to grasp Boolean searching, and may not use it even after instruction, it could be left out of first-year instruction, freeing up valuable class time to focus on concepts such as question development and source evaluation. Overall, natural search language is at least as good as Boolean searching. Performance differences between databases varied. But on the other, as we see in Fury Road, as well as the earlier films, the flame of who he once was still burns inside of him-he was a cop, a husband, a father, a good man-which is the part of him that won’t let him walk away from trouble. On one hand, he floats through this desolate existence, just surviving. In a ruined world already tearing itself apart, this was the last thing tethering Max to the remnants of civilization, and severing that final tie set him adrift, which we subsequently saw in The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome. In 1979’s Mad Max, Max, played by Mel Gibson, loses his wife and infant son to a vicious motorcycle gang headed by Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne, who also plays the villain Immortan Joe in Fury Road). Mad is both on a quest to find himself, his better self, and outrun his past. This character type is also one with a past, and as you see, haunted by horrific visions, Max is certainly carrying around some rather hefty baggage with him as he wanders the sun-scorched wastes. Hardy’s Max is certainly a throwback to this archetype, only this time around they’ve taken the whole strong-but-silent thing to crazy-ass extremes, and swapped out horses for customized battlewagons and war rigs. Just as often, he’s a reluctant hero, one who doesn’t want to get involved initially, who only wants to look out for number one, but is moved by forces greater than himself to intervene. Did anyone else feel like this Max character wasn't really the Max we've seen in the prior three films? It didn't to me, and it was bugging me the whole film.Post-apocalyptic movies, including the Mad Max family of films, often take their cues from the western genre, stories where the grim, stoic man-of-action arrives on the troubled scene and takes measures, usually violent, to rectify the situation. The whole charm of the original Mad Max films for me is that Max himself was a calm, cool, collected badass in a world gone crazy. My problem is that he doesn't feel like the same character I loved in the original films. I know the main complaint some might have is that he wasn't the main character in the film. Finally, my biggest beef with the movie is the Mad Max character himself. I'll put on subtitles next time I watch this film. but I would like to know what they are saying while doing crazy things. Yes, the world is crazy in a beautfiul way. All the male crazy characters have weird accents, machines over their faces to distort their words, or are just flat out yelling. Luckily, the female characters (who are not crazy) I can understand clearly. Ok, I understand that, but it's so bad that I can't understand half the things being said. Actors are instructed to talk crazy to give characters more depth. Second, I hate movies in which I can't understand dialogue anymore. ![]() So this was a much needed breath of fresh air. Many forms were developed in Japan and these of course have Japanese names, while others were bred in Europe or America and usually have English-sounding names. Japanese gardeners began to collect these forms, and produce more from seedlings, so that today at least a thousand different forms are known. Unlike many plants, where each individual is very much the same as another, these trees are naturally very variable, with different leaf-forms, colors and tree shapes. More than an excuse for a picnic, momiji-gari is considered a lofty spiritual experience. Japanese maple produce small flowers in spring and the seeds are the small ‘keys’ typical of all maples, which twirl down to the ground in fall.įor many centuries the Japanese people have travelled to the countryside to see the fall color, like east-coast Americans admiring the sugar maple. However the leaves are much smaller than on typical maple trees and since many garden forms have deeply divided leaves they may not be immediately recognized as maple trees. Being a maple tree it has the typical lobed leaf, with veins spreading out like the fingers of a hand and ending in five to nine lobes, with one lobe in the centre of the leaf. This tree grows in the shade of larger forest trees, which is why it is more shade-tolerant than most other deciduous trees. The bark is smooth and gray on older limbs, but green, red or sometimes pink on younger shoots. These trees have a reputation for being hard to grow, but this is largely undeserved. There are also a wide number of varieties with red or purple leaves all summer, which bring a unique highlight to any garden. They may be upright in form, pendulous or cascading, with red or green leaves and as well as their stunning fall coloring, many have remarkable colors on their new spring leaves too. Some grow into small trees 20 feet or more in height, others remain as low shrubs reaching five feet only after many years of growth. A tree in fall is guaranteed to turn heads and gather admiring looks and the enormous variety of leaf forms, colors and tree shapes means that no matter what your taste or space restrictions, there will be a tree for you. Japanese maples are the most desirable garden trees that exist. However, not every shot or technique will work well in black and white. Black and white photography can give scenes a striking, timeless quality when done well. The reason black and white photography appeals to so many people is because it can be used in many situations for impactful results. It has been around for centuries, with many of the great painters of all time using it to create their masterpieces. Thus, the composition is simple without distracting color elements.Black and white photography is a classic art form that has never gone out of style. I also worked to contrast the softness of the water against the texture of the sandstone rocks around the falls. While the color image of Upper Falls at Hocking Hills State Park stood well on its own, I wanted to exclude much of the surroundings and lowered their values in post production after converting to black and white. This can be done both in your initial capture and further aided in your post production workflow. Simplifying is very important in black and white photography compositions. Ask yourself what is the subject what are you trying to convey. Remember a strong black and white photos relies mostly on shapes, forms, textures, light and shadows. It is important to realize though, that in black and white photography this can be distracting. Patterns in Black and White photography created by long exposure at a beach in Bandon, Oregon Simplification in Black and White PhotographyĬolor images, especially those using strong foreground elements, can have quite of few components all tied together with the use of color. I increased the luminance of my subject, the cattails and their reflection, and increased their contrast against the surrounding lake features. In the finished image I minimized the surrounding details by bringing down their values. They were several hundred feet away and the use of my telephoto help capture what I needed. But I knew at the time of capture that I wanted to emphasize the tall and seeming uniform cluster of cattails on the edge of this lake. Take for example the image “Lone Jack Cattails”. While there are times when conditions such as fog and other atmospheric conditions might allow for a more ethereal representation, higher contrast can really make a black and white. Using Contrast in Black and White Photographyīlack and white photography can handle, and one might argue needs, a lot of contrast. Without color you need to be sure you have a clear connection from foreground element to the background because you don’t have the color element to assist. In a like fashion, the Howling Dog Sea Stack has the foreground rock with the water reflections leading through to the mid ground underlying the sea stacks. ![]() The large patterned sea stack on the left helped balance out the composition.įoreground elements in back and white photography at Howling Dog Sea Stack, Bandon, Oregon In the Yaquina Head Lighthouse image below, the rock blanketed by the incoming surf provided the foreground with the white surf’s edge along the shoreline providing the leading line toward the lighthouse in the background. In color, the use of an exaggerated foreground component can be very effective, and combined with the element of color can really help in leading the viewer through the image. While this may be accurate, I think you must be a little more discerning in black and white. The use of strong foreground elements are a good way to anchor nature photography composition and help create a feeling of depth. Black and White Photography with strong Foreground Elements Let’s examine a few examples of how I visualize nature photography composition to create final black and white prints. And I think it is also a reason black and white seems to be more timeless and fitting for fine art. It is said color represents reality, where black and white photography is more about abstract. This is because color itself can be a key and compelling element in a successful nature photography composition. Some color photos, while very beautiful, just don’t work in black and white. My photography composition must stand on its own based on its structure of lines, patterns, contrast, light and form, and texture. As a result, I am not mentally distracted or seduced by any colorful compositional elements. When I shoot black and white photos I place my camera picture style to monochrome. ![]() ![]() We also discussed how understanding the effects of color filters as used in the film days could affect a monochrome representation, and how this might aid in previsualization as you approach a subject in the field. In my earlier article, Learning to See for Black and White Photography, we noted that by eliminating color your focus turns to form, lines, shadows, and texture. ![]() ![]() To speed things up, I place the bowl in the freezer for 5 minutes.Īdd the sugar, melted butter, salt (DO NOT SKIP THE SALT, salt is a must for cookie dough), and milk and mix to combine.Īdd a handful of rainbow sprinkles if desired and enjoy!
